Creating PDF Documents
There are a number of free applications that will convert existing documents of various formats (such as MS Office, rich text format or HTML) into PDF files. These programs tend to have minor limitations, such as not preserving the functionality of bookmarks, tables of contents, forms or URLs; however, for many simple documents that is not a concern.
We have tried several of these tools and can recommend the following:
1. PrimoPDF
This program will install itself as a 'printer' and you will need to select it via the "File / Print..." dialog in the program that your document was originally created in.
2. PDFCreator
PDFCreator is a similar application to PrimoPDF; however, unlike PromoPDF, it is open source. Download and install the executable (".exe") version with "Ghostscript".
3. PDF Online
PDF Online is a web application that offers free conversion of various file formats to PDF.
4. OpenOffice.org
This is a free open source equivalent to MS Office and includes alternatives for Word (Writer), Excel (Calc) and Powerpoint (Impress), among others. One of its many useful features is that all the programs have built-in PDF export capability, which simply involves clicking the PDF export button.
