Floating images to the right or left of text
When inserting images on a web page, it is often desirable to 'float' them to the right or left of other elements on the page, such as paragraphs of text, so that the page looks neat and balanced. We can achieve this effect using styles that specify how the image should be floated. If your website's style sheet has been configured in this way (ask if you are unsure) you can use the following instructions to float images.
How to float images
Insert an image into the document (follow steps on linked help page but do not close the dialog window).
- Click on the Appearance tab.
- From the Class drop-down list, select the "float-right" or "float-left" option.
- Finish inserting the image.
- Re-position the image by dragging and dropping it. (It will remain floated, but the other page elements will flow around the floated image differently, depending on where it is positioned.)
Tips
- It is recommended in most cases to float images to the right and to 'position' each image immediately to the left of the first character in a paragraph of text (by dragging the image, which moves the insertion point). This is generally the easiest way to neatly present the images on a page.
- To space images appropriately, you can 'place' each consecutive image next to consecutive characters, words or paragraphs.
- However, for best results don't try to float too many images on any single page (it is better to use a photo gallery feature to display lots of photos).
